Hi Sunday school families,
This week in Sunday school your children will hear the parable of the mustard seed. Read Matthew 13:31-32 with your families. The Kingdom of God is so far beyond our daily experiences that Jesus used many parables to try to explain what His Kingdom really is. Here He compares the Kingdom of God to something his followers were very familiar with, a mustard seed. Ask your kids to tell you what they know about seeds. They are tiny, they can grow to be very big, they need certain things (water, sun, soil) to grow and we must be patient before we see results and when nurtured, seeds multiply. Then talk about how this is similar to God’s Kingdom. God’s Kingdom can start with a tiny act of love and can grow, spread and produce amazing results. When we take His Kingdom and give it what it needs to grow (love, time, prayer, service) it gets bigger and stronger and it multiplies like weeds. We see it and feel it everywhere and there’s no stopping it! Sometimes it takes patience to see just how big of an impact some small deed can have, but this story reminds us not to worry that what we have to offer is too small-Just do it and watch and see God’s Kingdom grow.
God’s kingdom is not a place or time, but it’s His reign of grace and love in our lives. Nurture the kingdom in your child’s heart. Give it what it needs to grow and spread by praying with your children, sharing Bible stories, encouraging service and forgiving them often.
Key Verse: It starts as the smallest of seeds, but grows to the greatest of shrubs.” Matt. 13:32
This week’s secret service suggestion: Each Sunday school child will be making an offering container for lent this Sunday. Our church asks that each family offers just a dollar a day throughout the forty days of lent. Place the offering container in a prominent place. Everyday have each family member put coins in the container (totaling $1 for the family). Watch as small gifts grow to make a big difference. Do the math with your older kids: If each person in a family of 4 gives $.25 a day for 40 days and if each of our 350 families did this how much money could our church give to feed the hungry and spread God’s kingdom? A quarter doesn’t seem like much of a start, but it grows!
Have a great Week!
-See you Sunday,
-Cori
